The Ultimate Moving Checklist

â–¡Â 2 Months Before You Move
Now is the time to start going through all of your stuff, including drawers, closets, sheds, and cupboards. Sort through everything and determine what you need and what you no longer want. The stuff that you no longer want can be given to a charity or sold at a yard sale. While going through things, inventory your valuables and note their replacement cost for insurance reasons. You will also want to contact various moving companies to gather estimates.
□ 1 ½ Months Before You Move
This is the time to start taking care of the basic paperwork involved in moving. About a month and half before you move you will want to make sure all of the real estate stuff is on track, check to see if your closing date has changed and make rental arrangements for yourself if needed.
â–¡Â 1 Month Before You Move
Now is the time to start finalizing things for your move. The most important thing you will need to do is contact all of your utility providers:Â electric, gas, water, sewer, phone, cable, etc. and set up a disconnection date. Ideally the date should be the day after you leave not the day of. You will also need to contact new utility companies to get service set up in your new home a few days before you arrive.
If you are going to be packing on your own, now is the time to start getting ready for it by gathering boxes and other needed materials. As you gather the boxes together you need to start packing. Start by packing stuff that you are not going to be using in the next month before you move. For example, don’t pack up all of your forks and plates 30 days before you move instead start with the linen closet or your china.
â–¡Â 1 Week Before You Move
Now is the time to finish up all of your packing. If you are using a moving company now is the time to get everything squared away with them, arrange payment and make sure you have cash on hand to tip them the day of the move. Take care of any change of address forms at the local post office, as well as all of your monthly bills.

□ Moving Day
The day you have waited for is finally here and everything seems to be going according to plan. All that you have left is to watch the movers pack up your belongings, sign the paperwork, and load up the car with whatever belongs you plan to take with you. Once everything is done take a final walk through the house to ensure nothing is left behind. Now turn off the lights, lock all the windows, and close and lock the door.
